Check Point Firewall/VPN-1 NGX R65/R71 Topology Request information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Check Point Firewall and VPN-1 NGX R65/R71 (Firewall Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component Topology Request Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality.

The bug was discovered 12/14/2011. The weakness was presented 03/12/2012 by Patrick Webster as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is available at osisecurity.com.au. The vendor was not involved in the coordination of the public release. The attack can be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation requires a single authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

A public exploit has been developed by Patrick Webster in Ruby and been published even before and not after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at metasploit.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 89 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at supportcenter.checkpoint.com.Proper firewalling of tcp/264 is able to address this issue. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Cisco ASA as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be applying a restrictive firewalling. A possible mitigation has been published 6 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Check Point does not see this as a security issue. They respond with sk69360: "The SmartCenter and Security Gateway names are part of the gateway certificate that is presented for authentication in many scenarios. The gateway name is in the Subject field of the certificate and the SmartCenter name is in the Issuer field, since Internal CA runs on the SmartCenter. Certificate owner name and CA names are considered public information."
