A vulnerability has been found in Trend Micro Control Manager 5.5/6 (Log Management Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the file AdHocQuery_Processor.aspx of the component Control Manager. The manipulation of the argument id with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

SQL injection vulnerability in the ad hoc query module in Trend Micro Control Manager (TMCM) before 5.5.0.1823 and 6.0 before 6.0.0.1449 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary SQL commands via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was published 09/24/2012 by Tom Gregory, Mada R. Perdhana and Hanny Haliwela with Spentera Research (Website). The advisory is shared at spentera.com. The public release has been coordinated with Trend Micro. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-2998 since 05/30/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1505 for this issue.

A public exploit has been developed by otoy/modpr0be in Python. It is possible to download the exploit at spentera.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:AdHocQuery_Processor.aspx it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62628 (Trend Micro Control Manager AdHocQuery_Processor.aspx id Parameter SQL Injection), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows.

Applying the patch 1061043 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at esupport.trendmicro.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12638.
