Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in actionpack/lib/action_view/helpers/translation_helper.rb in the internationalization component in Ruby on Rails 3.x before 3.2.16 and 4.x before 4.0.2 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via a crafted string that triggers generation of a fallback string by the i18n gem.

The weakness was disclosed 12/06/2013 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at groups.google.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-4491 since 06/12/2013. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71257 (FreeBSD : rails -- multiple vulnerabilities (6a806960-3016-44ed-8575-8614a7cb57c7)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12793 (Ruby on Rails Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 3.1.2 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (89433) and Tenable (71257). The entries 11373, 11374, 11375 and 11376 are pretty similar.
