GNU C Library up to 2.18 getaddrinfo memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in GNU C Library (Software Library). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function getaddrinfo. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the getaddrinfo function in sysdeps/posix/getaddrinfo.c in GNU C Library (aka glibc or libc6) 2.18 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a (1) hostname or (2) IP address that triggers a large number of AF_INET6 address results. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2013-1914.

The weakness was presented 12/12/2013 (Website). The advisory is shared at sourceware.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-4458 since 06/12/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71092 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : glibc (MDVSA-2013:283)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350811 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for glibc: AL2012-2015-020).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (88246) and Tenable (71092). See 7570 and 9979 for similar entries.
