Heap-based buffer overflow in the ms_escher_get_data function in plugins/excel/ms-escher.c in GNOME Office Gnumeric before 1.12.9 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted xls file with a crafted length value.
The weakness was disclosed 12/18/2013 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at git.gnome.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-6836 since 11/20/2013. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75408 (openSUSE Security Update : gnumeric (openSUSE-SU-2014:0138-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166742 (OpenSuSE Security Update for gnumeric (openSUSE-SU-2014:0138-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.12.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.gnome.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.
