The dissect_sip_common function in epan/dissectors/packet-sip.c in the SIP dissector in Wireshark 1.8.x before 1.8.12 and 1.10.x before 1.10.4 does not check for empty lines, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via a crafted packet.
The weakness was released 12/19/2013 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at anonsvn.wireshark.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-7112 since 12/16/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71520 (Wireshark 1.8.x < 1.8.12 Multiple DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350398 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for wireshark: ALAS-2014-330).
Upgrading to version 1.10.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
