Linux Kernel 3.14.8/3.15.1 SCTP sctp_association_free COOKIE_ECHO Chunk input validation
CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 3.14.8/3.15.1 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function
sctp_association_free of the component SCTP Handler. The manipulation as part of a COOKIE_ECHO Chunk leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability.
The weakness was published 06/30/2014 by Petr Matousek as Bug 1113967 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-4667 since 06/26/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77140 (Oracle Linux 5 / 6 : Unbreakable Enterprise kernel (ELSA-2014-3069)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195600 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux Vulnerabilities (USN-2334-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 16636.
