Adobe Flash Player up to 11.4.402.278 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Adobe Flash Player up to 11.4.402.278 (Multimedia Player Software). This issue affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in Adobe Flash Player before 10.3.183.29 and 11.x before 11.4.402.287 on Windows and Mac OS X, before 10.3.183.29 and 11.x before 11.2.202.243 on Linux, before 11.1.111.19 on Android 2.x and 3.x, and before 11.1.115.20 on Android 4.x; Adobe AIR before 3.4.0.2710; and Adobe AIR SDK before 3.4.0.2710 allows attackers to execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors, a different vulnerability than other Flash Player buffer overflow CVEs listed in APSB12-22.

The weakness was shared 10/08/2012 by Mateusz Jurczyk, Gynvael Coldwind and Fermin Serna with Google Security Team as APSB12-22 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at adobe.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-5254 since 10/04/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/14/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62479 (Adobe AIR 3.x <= 3.4.0.2540 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB12-22)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166696 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for flash-player (SUSE-SU-2012:1326-2)).

Upgrading to version 11.4.402.287 or 10.3.183.29 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at adobe.com. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Microsoft Silverlight, Java or Javascript as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (79075) and Tenable (62479). technet.microsoft.com is providing further details. The entries 6601, 6595, 6614 and 6606 are related to this item.
