A vulnerability has been found in Poppler up to 0.10.3 (Document Reader Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function JBIG2Stream::readSegments
of the file JBIG2Stream.cc. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The JBIG2Stream::readSegments method in JBIG2Stream.cc in Poppler before 0.24.5 does not use the correct specifier within a format string, which allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (segmentation fault and application crash) via a crafted PDF file.
The weakness was presented 01/25/2014 as Bug 1048199 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-7296 since 01/17/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75245 (openSUSE Security Update : poppler (openSUSE-SU-2014:0185-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166770 (OpenSuSE Security Update for Poppler (openSUSE-SU-2014:0255-1)).
Upgrading to version 0.10.4 eliminates this vulnerability.
