A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Word -/2003/2007/2010 (Word Processing Software). It has been declared as critical. Use-after-free vulnerability in Microsoft Word 2003 SP3, 2007 SP2 and SP3, and 2010 SP1; Word Viewer; Office Compatibility Pack SP2 and SP3; Word Automation Services on Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010; and Office Web Apps 2010 SP1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted RTF document, aka "RTF File listid Use-After-Free Vulnerability."

The weakness was disclosed 10/09/2012 by SecuriTeam with Beyond Security's SecuriTeam Secure Disclosure as MS12-064 as confirmed bulletin (Website). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-2528 since 05/09/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack needs to approached within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62459 (MS12-064: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Word Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2742319)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110192 (Microsoft Word Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS12-064)).

Applying the patch MS12-064 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12605.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (62459). Additional details are provided at technet.microsoft.com. The entries 6621, 6623, 6624 and 6625 are pretty similar.
