Apple Mac OS X up to 10.9.2 Graphics Drivers 32-Bit Executable File null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.9.2 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component Graphics Drivers. The manipulation as part of a 32-Bit Executable File leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Graphics Drivers in Apple OS X before 10.9.4 allows attackers to gain privileges or cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and system crash) via a 32-bit executable file for a crafted application.

The weakness was presented 06/30/2014 by Ian Beer (Cloudfuzzer) with Google Project Zero as HT6296 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-1379 since 01/08/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 76317 (Mac OS X 10.9.x < 10.9.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122214 (Apple Mac OS X v10.9.4 Not Installed (HT6281, HT203015)).

Upgrading to version 10.9.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (94153) and Tenable (76317). Additional details are provided at archives.neohapsis.com. See 66948, 66949, 66950 and 66951 for similar entries.
