A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Microsoft Windows up to Vista (Operating System). This affects some unknown processing of the component DirectShow Object Handler. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-2780 since 04/10/2014. An attack has to be approached locally. Required for exploitation is a authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 76410 (MS14-041: Vulnerability in Microsoft DirectShow Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2975681)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90964 (Microsoft Windows DirectShow Privilege Escalation Vulnerability (MS14-041)).

Applying the patch MS14-041 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (76410), SecurityFocus (BID 68392†), SecurityTracker (ID 1030537†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-45324†). The entries VDB-67018, VDB-67016 and VDB-67015 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
