Mozilla Firefox/Thunderbird 30.0 Cesium JavaScript Library WebGLFramebuffer.cpp code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 30.0 (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the file WebGLFramebuffer.cpp of the component Cesium JavaScript Library. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Mozilla Firefox before 31.0, Firefox ESR 24.x before 24.7, and Thunderbird before 24.7 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted WebGL content constructed with the Cesium JavaScript library.

The weakness was shared 07/22/2014 by Patrick Cozzi as MFSA2014-62 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-1556 since 01/16/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 76687 (CentOS 5 / 6 : thunderbird (CESA-2014:0918)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122381 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner firefox (RHSA-2014:0919)).

Upgrading to version 31 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (94775) and Tenable (76687). bugzilla.mozilla.org is providing further details. The entries 67222, 67223, 67224 and 67225 are related to this item.
