A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Wireshark up to 1.10.8 (Packet Analyzer Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component GTP/GSM Management Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability.
The weakness was presented 07/31/2014 by Buildbot Builder as Bug #10216 / wnpa-sec-2014-09 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at wireshark.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-5163 since 07/31/2014. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The advisory points out:
It may be possible to make Wireshark crash by injecting a malformed packet onto the wire or by convincing someone to read a malformed packet trace file.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77111 (Debian DSA-3002-1 : wireshark - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167274 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for wireshark (SUSE-SU-2014:1221-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.10.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
