A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in IBM WebSphere Portal 6.1/7.0/8.0/8.5.0 (Application Server Software). This issue affects an unknown function of the component Redirect Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a redirect vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-601. A web application accepts a user-controlled input that specifies a link to an external site, and uses that link in a Redirect. This simplifies phishing attacks. Impacted is integrity.

The weakness was disclosed 07/30/2014 as swg21680230 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at www-304.ibm.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-4760 since 07/09/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1204.001 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77540 (IBM WebSphere Portal Open Redirect Vulnerability (PI19877)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 89002 (IBM WebSphere Portal Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).

Applying the patch PI19877 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ibm.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (94657) and Tenable (77540). The entries 67274, 67275 and 67276 are pretty similar.
