GNU C Library 12.04 getaddrinfo denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in GNU C Library 12.04 (Software Library). Affected by this issue is the function getaddrinfo. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability.

The weakness was released 10/28/2013 by Maksymilian Arciemowicz as Bug 1009643 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. The bug report contains:

I believe the analysis in this bug report is incorrect. The security implications are unclear. A straight copy of a long name to a stack buffer should trigger a crash because it hits the guard page, but even that could be a problem for daemons. On the other hand, it's impossible to know for sure that no GCC version ever lays out the stack in such a way that we end up with a problem. Multi-threaded programs linking in script interpreters are more exposed to these problems, too.
This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-4357 since 06/12/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74351 (SuSE 11.3 Security Update : glibc (SAT Patch Number 9262)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195576 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Eglibc Vulnerabilities (USN-2306-1)).

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (95103) and Tenable (74351). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 13587 and 67049.
