A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL up to 0.9.8/1.0.0m/1.0.1h (Network Encryption Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component DTLS Packet Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a double free vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-415. The product calls free() twice on the same memory address, potentially leading to modification of unexpected memory locations. As an impact it is known to affect availability.

The issue has been introduced in 07/05/2005. The weakness was published 08/06/2014 by Wan-Teh Chang with Google as secadv_20140806.txt as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at openssl.org. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-3505 since 05/14/2014. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3319 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77091 (Slackware 13.0 / 13.1 / 13.37 / 14.0 / 14.1 / current : openssl (SSA:2014-220-01)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Slackware Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122577 (WinSCP OpenSSL Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 0.9.8zb, 1.0.0n or 1.0.1i eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 16729.
