OpenSSL up to 0.9.8/1.0.0m/1.0.1h DTLS Anonymous null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in OpenSSL up to 0.9.8/1.0.0m/1.0.1h (Network Encryption Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component DTLS Anonymous Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability.

The issue has been introduced in 07/05/2005. The weakness was presented 08/06/2014 by Felix Gröbert with Google as secadv_20140806.txt as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openssl.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the project team. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-3510 since 05/14/2014. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3319 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78196 (F5 Networks BIG-IP : OpenSSL vulnerability (SOL15568)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family F5 Networks Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122577 (WinSCP OpenSSL Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 0.9.8zb, 1.0.0n or 1.0.1i eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

The fix was developed by Emilia Käsper of the OpenSSL development team.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (95164) and Tenable (78196). See 67297, 67298, 67299 and 67300 for similar entries.
