OpenSSL up to 1.0.1h TLS 1.0 Message Fragmentation missing encryption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in OpenSSL (Network Encryption Software). Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component TLS 1.0 Message Fragmentation Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a missing encryption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-311. The product does not encrypt sensitive or critical information before storage or transmission. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity.

The issue has been introduced in 03/29/2010. The weakness was shared 08/06/2014 by David Benjamin and Adam Langley with Google as secadv_20140806.txt as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at openssl.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-3511 since 05/14/2014. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1591 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78195 (F5 Networks BIG-IP : TLS vulnerability (SOL15564)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family F5 Networks Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122577 (WinSCP OpenSSL Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 1.0.1i eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

The fix was developed by David Benjamin.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (95162) and Tenable (78195). The entries 67297, 67298, 67299 and 67300 are related to this item.
