A vulnerability has been found in PHP 5.3/5.4.0 (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function dns_get_record of the component DNS TXT Record Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The weakness was released 08/21/2014 by David Kutalek with Red Hat as Bug 1132589 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-3597 since 05/14/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77742 (SuSE 11.3 Security Update : php53 (SAT Patch Number 9718)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169006 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for php53 (SUSE-SU-2016:1638-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
