net-snmp up to 5.7.0 SNMP Trap Processor -OQ resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in net-snmp (Network Management Software). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is an unknown part of the component SNMP Trap Processor. The manipulation of the argument -OQ with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-399. This is going to have an impact on availability.

The weakness was shared 07/31/2014 as confirmed patch (sourceforge). The advisory is available at sourceforge.net. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-3565 since 05/14/2014. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The advisory points out:

When -OQ command line argument is used, variable formatter preffers the type of the varible parsed from a MIB file instead of checking type of the variable as parsed from SNMP message. This can lead to crashes when incoming packets contains a variable with NULL type, while the MIB says the variable should be non-NULL, like Integer. The formatter then tries to interpret the NULL (from packet) as Integer (from MIB file).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77612 (Fedora 19 : net-snmp-5.7.2-15.fc19 (2014-10099)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196212 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Net-snmp Vulnerabilities (USN-2711-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sourceforge.net. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (95638) and Tenable (77612). The entry 78826 is related to this item.
