A vulnerability classified as critical was found in cURL and libcURL up to 7.31.1 (Network Utility Software). This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component Cookie Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issues vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-310. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. CVE summarizes:
cURL and libcurl before 7.38.0 allow remote attackers to bypass the Same Origin Policy and set cookies for arbitrary sites by setting a cookie for a top-level domain.
The weakness was presented 09/10/2014 by Tim Ruehsen as libcurl cookie leak for TLDs as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at curl.haxx.se. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-3620 since 05/14/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 02/04/2019). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600. This vulnerability has a historic impact due to its background and reception. The advisory points out:
libcurl wrongly allows cookies to be set for Top Level Domains (TLDs), thus making them apply broader than cookies are allowed. This can allow arbitrary sites to set cookies that then would get sent to a different and unrelated site or domain.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 26 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78350 (Amazon Linux AMI : curl (ALAS-2014-407)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350322 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for curl: ALAS-2014-407).
Upgrading to version 7.38.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at curl.haxx.se. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (95924) and Tenable (78350). Additional details are provided at bugzilla.redhat.com. See 67527 for similar entry.
