Wireshark up to 1.10.9 SDP Dissector memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Wireshark up to 1.10.9 (Packet Analyzer Software). Affected is an unknown functionality of the component SDP Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The SDP dissector in Wireshark 1.10.x before 1.10.10 creates duplicate hashtables for a media channel, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted packet to the RTP dissector.

The weakness was presented 09/16/2014 by Buildbot Builder as wnpa-sec-2014-12 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at wireshark.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-6422 since 09/16/2014. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83002 (Debian DLA-198-1 : wireshark security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350280 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for wireshark: ALAS-2014-446).

Upgrading to version 1.10.10 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (96228) and Tenable (83002). See 67697, 67699, 67700 and 67701 for similar entries.
