base/memory/shared_memory_win.cc in Google Chrome before 38.0.2125.101 on Windows does not properly implement read-only restrictions on shared memory, which allows attackers to bypass a sandbox protection mechanism via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was disclosed 10/07/2014 by James Forshaw (Cloudfuzzer) with Google Project Zero as Stable Channel Update, October 2014 as confirmed release notes (Website). The advisory is available at googlechromereleases.blogspot.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-3196 since 05/03/2014. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78104 (FreeBSD : chromium -- multiple vulnerabilities (d2bbcc01-4ec3-11e4-ab3f-00262d5ed8ee)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167363 (OpenSuSE Security Update for chromium (openSUSE-SU-2014:1378-1)).
Upgrading to version 38.0.2125.101 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The release notes contains the following remark:
This update includes 159 security fixes, including 113 relatively minor fixes found using MemorySanitizer.
