The rtrlet web application in the Web Console in Novell ZENworks Asset Management (ZAM) 7.5 uses a hard-coded username of Ivanhoe and a hard-coded password of Scott for the (1) GetFile_Password and (2) GetConfigInfo_Password operations, which allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information via a crafted rtrlet/rtr request for the HandleMaintenanceCalls function.
The bug was discovered 08/09/2012. The weakness was published 10/15/2012 by Juan Vazquez as New 0day Exploit: Novell ZENworks as not defined blog post (Rapid7 Community) via US CERT. The advisory is shared for download at community.rapid7.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-4933 since 09/17/2012. The attack may be launched remotely. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1552.
A public exploit has been developed by Juan Vazquez in HTTP Request and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at community.rapid7.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 67 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:/rtrlet/rtr it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62704 (Novell ZENworks Asset Management rtrlet Component GetFile_Password Method Hardcoded Credentials Information Disclosure), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.
Addressing this vulnerability is possible by firewalling . Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12666.
