A vulnerability has been found in Pidgin up to 2.10.9 (Messaging Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component SSL/TLS Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issues vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-310. As an impact it is known to affect integrity.
The weakness was presented 10/22/2014 by Jacob Appelbaum with Tor Project as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at pidgin.im. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-3694 since 05/14/2014. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue. The advisory points out:
Both of libpurple's bundled SSL/TLS plugins (one for GnuTLS and one for NSS) failed to check that the Basic Constraints extension allowed intermediate certificates to act as CAs. This allowed anyone with any valid certificate to create a fake certificate for any arbitrary domain and Pidgin would trust it.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79093 (Fedora 21 : pidgin-2.10.10-2.fc21 (2014-14112)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157502 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for pidgin (ELSA-2017-1854)).
Upgrading to version 2.10.10 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at hg.pidgin.im. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
Both bundled plugins were changed to check the Basic Constraints extension on all intermediate CA certificates.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (97730) and Tenable (79093). See 68054, 68055 and 68057 for similar entries.
