Pidgin up to 2.10.9 libpurple Emoticon memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Pidgin up to 2.10.9 (Messaging Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown functionality in the library libpurple. The manipulation as part of a Emoticon leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

markup.c in the MXit protocol plugin in libpurple in Pidgin before 2.10.10 allows remote servers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a large length value in an emoticon response.

The weakness was published 10/22/2014 by Yves Younan and Richard Johnson with Cisco as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at pidgin.im. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-3695 since 05/14/2014. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The advisory points out:

A malicious server or man-in-the-middle could trigger a crash in libpurple by sending an emoticon with an overly large length value.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80022 (SuSE 11.3 Security Update : pidgin (SAT Patch Number 10078)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 236432 (Red Hat Update for pidgin (RHSA-2017:1854)).

Upgrading to version 2.10.10 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at hg.pidgin.im. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

Verify that the length value is valid before attempting to read data from the buffer.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (97732) and Tenable (80022). Similar entries are available at 68053, 68054 and 68057.
