Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel 3.18 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component CVE-2014-8480 Fix. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-399. As an impact it is known to affect availability.

The weakness was disclosed 10/24/2014 by Andy Lutomirski as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is available at seclists.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-8481 since 10/24/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The advisory points out:

I also discovered that Nadav's fix was incomplete (or that there was another bug, depending on your perspective). Certain invalid instructions (due to multiple error cases, including a failure to fetch part of the instruction or due to the instruction being too long) could trigger the same NULL pointer dereference.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78814 (Fedora 21 : kernel-3.17.2-300.fc21 (2014-14126)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122939 (Fedora Security Update for kernel (FEDORA-2014-1412)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (97751), Tenable (78814), SecurityFocus (BID 70712†), Secunia (SA62042†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-46771†). The entry VDB-68061 is pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
