McAfee Endpoint Encryption/Removable Media Protection Password Hash entropy

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in McAfee Endpoint Encryption and Removable Media Protection. It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component Password Hash Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a entropy vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-331. The product uses an algorithm or scheme that produces insufficient entropy, leaving patterns or clusters of values that are more likely to occur than others. Impacted is integrity.

The weakness was shared 10/31/2014 by Matthias Deeg with SySS GmbH as SYSS-2014-008 as confirmed advisory (Packetstorm). The advisory is shared for download at packetstormsecurity.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-8565 since 10/30/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.001. The advisory points out:

Due to the use of a predictable, hard-coded salt, it is possible for an attacker to precompute password candidates and thus to perform more efficient dictionary attacks against the password-based authentication with the use of rainbow tables (time-memory trade-off).

A private exploit has been developed by Matthias Deeg. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 77 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (98425). The entry 68085 is related to this item.
