HP Router/Switch SNMP information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in HP Router and Switch (Router Operating System) (affected version unknown). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the component SNMP. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

Certain HP Access Controller, Fabric Module, Firewall, Router, Switch, and UTM Appliance products; certain HP 3Com Access Controller, Router, and Switch products; certain HP H3C Access Controller, Firewall, Router, Switch, and Switch and Route Processing Unit products; and certain Huawei Firewall/Gateway, Router, Switch, and Wireless products do not properly implement access control as defined in h3c-user.mib 2.0 and hh3c-user.mib 2.0, which allows remote authenticated users to discover credentials in UserInfoEntry values via an SNMP request with the read-only community.

The weakness was disclosed 10/22/2012 by Kurt Grutzmacher with CERT/CC as HPSBHF02819 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at h20565.www2.hp.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-3268 since 06/06/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 04/18/2021). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592. This vulnerability has a historic impact due to its background and reception. There are some objects with data in MIB 1.3.6.1.4.1.2011.10 (old) and 1.3.6.1.4.1.25506 (new).

A public exploit has been developed by Kurt Grutzmacher (@grutz) in Ruby and been published 1 days after the advisory. The exploit is available at github.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62759 (HP/H3C and Huawei SNMP User Data Information Disclosure), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SNMP. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 43596 (Huawei NIP5100 SNMP Vulnerability(hw-197483)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting Disable SNMP.Addressing this vulnerability is possible by firewalling udp/161 (snmp). The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Cisco Router or Switch as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12628.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (79543) and Tenable (62759). grutztopia.jingojango.net is providing further details.
