A vulnerability was found in Adobe Flash Player up to 11.2.202.411/13.0.0.250/15.0.0.189 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-8440 since 10/22/2014. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Metasploit in Ruby and been published 7 months after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79139 (Adobe AIR <= 15.0.0.293 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB14-24)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100216 (Microsoft Windows Update for Vulnerabilities in Adobe Flash Player in Internet Explorer (KB3004150)).
Upgrading to version 11.2.202.418, 13.0.0.252 or 15.0.0.223 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 17088.
