A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows up to XP (Operating System). It has been rated as very critical. This issue affects the function SafeArrayDimen
in the library OleAut32.dll of the component OLE Automation Array Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The issue has been introduced in 08/24/1995. The weakness was published 11/11/2014 by Robert Freeman with IBM X-Force as MS14-064 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-6332 since 09/11/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 02/24/2022). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue. Due to its background and reception, this vulnerability has a historic impact.
A public exploit has been developed by Ehsan Noreddini in Ruby and been published 2 years after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7019 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79125 (MS14-064: Vulnerabilities in Windows OLE Could Allow Remote Code Execution (3011443)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Applying the patch MS14-064 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 16946.
