Citrix Xen 4.1.0/4.1.1/4.1.2/4.1.3/4.2.0 PV Domain Builder input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component PV Domain Builder. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

The PV domain builder in Xen 4.2 and earlier does not validate the size of the kernel or ramdisk (1) before or (2) after decompression, which allows local guest administrators to cause a denial of service (domain 0 memory consumption) via a crafted (a) kernel or (b) ramdisk.

The weakness was presented 10/26/2012 as 51071 as confirmed advisory (Secunia). The advisory is available at secunia.com. The vendor was not involved in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-4544 since 08/21/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68725 (Oracle Linux 5 : xen (ELSA-2013-0241)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166818 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Xen (SUSE-SU-2014:0411-1)).

Applying the patch xsa25 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at openwall.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
