A draft of this advisory was mistakenly sent to xen-devel. The Xen Project Security Team apologises for this error. We are working to share best working practices amongst the team to reduce the risks of recurrance.The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-9030. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The advisory points out:
An error handling path in the processing of MMU_MACHPHYS_UPDATE failed to drop a page reference which was acquired in an earlier processing step.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123470 (Fedora Security Update for xen (FEDORA-2015-3721)).
Applying the patch xsa113.patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at xenbits.xen.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
