A vulnerability has been found in VideoLAN VLC Media Player 2.0.3 (Multimedia Player Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function ReadAV
in the library libpng_plugin. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
libpng_plugin in VideoLAN VLC media player 2.0.3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted PNG file.
The weakness was released 10/11/2012 by Jean Pascal Pereira as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at cve.mitre.org. The vendor was not involved in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-5470 since 10/24/2012. The attack can be initiated remotely. Upgrading to version 2.0.4 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at videolan.org. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12790.
