A vulnerability was found in Linux Foundation Xen on x86 (Virtualization Software). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is some unknown processing of the component MMU_MACHPHYS_UPDATE Processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
The do_mmu_update function in arch/x86/mm.c in Xen 3.2.x through 4.4.x does not properly manage page references, which allows remote domains to cause a denial of service by leveraging control over an HVM guest and a crafted MMU_MACHPHYS_UPDATE.
The weakness was presented 11/20/2014 by Andrew Cooper with Citrix as XSA-113 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at xenbits.xen.org. The advisory contains:
A draft of this advisory was mistakenly sent to xen-devel. The Xen Project Security Team apologises for this error. We are working to share best working practices amongst the team to reduce the risks of recurrance. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-9030 since 11/20/2014. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The advisory points out:
An error handling path in the processing of MMU_MACHPHYS_UPDATE failed to drop a page reference which was acquired in an earlier processing step.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81027 (Debian DSA-3140-1 : xen - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123470 (Fedora Security Update for xen (FEDORA-2015-3721)).
Applying the patch xsa113.patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at xenbits.xen.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (98853) and Tenable (81027). See 67683, 68221, 68222 and 68255 for similar entries.
