Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in OpenVAS Manager up to 5.0.6. This issue affects the function modify_schedule
of the component OMP Command Handler. The manipulation of the argument timezone
with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
SQL injection vulnerability in OpenVAS Manager before 4.0.6 and 5.x before 5.0.7 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary SQL commands via the timezone parameter in a modify_schedule OMP command.
The weakness was presented 11/28/2014 by Michael Eissele with Greenbone Networks as OVSA20141128 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openvas.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with OpenVAS. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-9220 since 12/02/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details as well as a exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1505 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:
It has been identified that OpenVAS Manager is vulnerable to sql injections due to a improper handling of the timezone parameter in modify_schedule OMP command. It has been identified that this vulnerability may allow read-access via sql for authorized user account which have permission to modify schedule objects.
It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80406 (Fedora 21 : openvas-cli-1.3.1-1.fc21 / openvas-manager-5.0.7-1.fc21 / openvas-scanner-4.0.5-1.fc21 (2014-17049)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks.
