Cisco OpenH264 1.2.0 Media Processing decode_slice.cpp memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Cisco OpenH264 1.2.0 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the file decode_slice.cpp of the component Media Processing Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Use-after-free vulnerability in decode_slice.cpp in Cisco OpenH264 1.2.0 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an encoded media file.

The weakness was disclosed 11/24/2014 by Oksana as ID 36501 as confirmed alert (Website) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). The advisory is available at tools.cisco.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-8002 since 10/08/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The advisory points out:

A vulnerability in applications that use the Cisco OpenH264 library could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause a denial of service condition or execute arbitrary code. The vulnerability is due to improper handling of input within encoded media files. An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability to cause an application using the affected component to terminate unexpectedly or execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the targeted application.

The advisory illustrates:

Exploit vectors depend on the role and network position of applications relying on the Cisco OpenH264 libraries. Attacks targeting client-based systems such as web browsers or media players may require user interaction. Attacks against network applications processing media files may allow exploitation by unauthenticated users from untrusted networks, depending on configuration. Any exploits depend on attackers causing an application using the vulnerable libraries to process a malicious encoded media file, which could be difficult in some configurations.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (99121). The entry 68344 is pretty similar.
