Affected by this vulnerability is the function krb5_add_ber_mem_ldap_mod of the component Principal Entry Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. SecurityTracker mentions: "Systems with kadmind configured to use LDAP for the KDC database are affected."

The weakness was disclosed 12/16/2014 by Patrik Kis (Website). The advisory is shared at web.mit.edu. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-5354 since 08/19/2014. The attack can be launched remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81331 (FreeBSD : krb5 -- Vulnerabilities in kadmind, libgssrpc, gss_process_context_token VU#540092 (3a888a1e-b321-11e4-83b2-206a8a720317)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196000 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Krb5 Vulnerabilities (USN-2498-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (99347) and Tenable (81331). The entries 67788, 68436 and 69040 are pretty similar.
