Integer overflow in tif_packbits.c in bmp2tif in libtiff 4.0.3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via crafted BMP image, related to dimensions, which triggers an out-of-bounds read.
The weakness was presented 12/22/2014 by Paris Zoumpouloglou with Project Zero Labs as confirmed posting (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is available at seclists.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-9330 since 12/07/2014. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 12 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83499 (Debian DLA-221-1 : tiff security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 236058 (Red Hat Update for libtiff (RHSA-2016:1547)).
A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
