. The manipulation of the argument -t
as part of a ZIP Archive leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was presented 12/22/2014 by Michele Spagnuolo with Google Security Team as #2014-011 as confirmed advisory (oCERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at ocert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-8141 since 10/10/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80255 (Debian DSA-3113-1 : unzip - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350198 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for unzip: ALAS-2015-504).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
