Linux Foundation Xen up to 4.4.1 on x86 use after free

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Foundation Xen up to 4.4.1 on x86 (Virtualization Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

Use-after-free vulnerability in Xen 4.2.x, 4.3.x, and 4.4.x allows remote domains to cause a denial of service (system crash) via a crafted hypercall during HVM guest teardown.

The weakness was published 01/06/2015 by Mihai Donu with BitDefender as XSA-116 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xenbits.xen.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-0361 since 12/17/2014. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The advisory points out:

Certain data accessible (via hypercalls) by the domain controlling the execution of a HVM domain is being freed prematurely, leading to the respective memory regions to possibly be read from and written to in ways unexpected by their new owner(s).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80576 (Fedora 20 : xen-4.3.3-9.fc20 (2015-0345)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167760 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for Xen (SUSE-SU-2015:0613-1)).

Applying the patch xsa116.patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (100055), Tenable (80576), SecurityFocus (BID 71882†), SecurityTracker (ID 1031498†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-47976†). Similar entries are available at VDB-68426 and VDB-68427.
