A vulnerability has been found in LibTIFF (Image Processing Software) (the affected version is unknown) and classified as very critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the file tools/ppm2tiff.c of the component Input Sanitizer. The manipulation as part of a File leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was disclosed 11/02/2012 by Huzaifa Sidhpurwala with Red Hat Security Response Team as 871700 as not defined advisory (Red Hat Security Advisory). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-4564 since 08/21/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/18/2021).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80623 (Oracle Solaris Third-Party Patch Update : gimp (cve_2012_4564_design_error)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350600 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for libtiff: ALAS-2012-147).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at bugzilla.redhat.com.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (79750), Vulnerability Center (SBV-37403) and Tenable (80623). The entries 7089, 61582 and 62785 are pretty similar.
