Sophos Anti-Virus Visual Basic 6 File memoryRDWR integer coercion

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Sophos Anti-Virus (Anti-Malware Software) (unknown version) and classified as very critical. This issue affects the function memoryRDWR of the component Visual Basic 6 File Handler. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-192. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The weakness was presented 11/05/2012 by Tavis Ormandy (@taviso) with Google Security Team as sophailv2.pdf as confirmed document (Full-Disclosure). It is possible to read the advisory at The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Sophos. As demonstrated in the initial paper, installing Sophos Antivirus exposes machines to considerable risk. If Sophos do not urgently improve their security posture, their continued deployment causes significant risk to global networks and infrastructure. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/15/2018).

A public exploit has been developed by Tavis Ormandy (@taviso) and been published immediately after the advisory. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The exploit is available at The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 42 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. In response to early access to the initial report, Sophos did allocate some resources to resolve the issues discussed, however they were cearly ill-equipped to handle the output of one co-operative, non-adversarial security researcher. A sophisticated state-sponsored or highly motivated attacker could devastate the entire Sophos user base with ease.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (79813), SecurityTracker (ID 1027725) and Exploit-DB (22509). is providing further details. See 6868, 6865, 6866 and 6870 for similar entries.
