Race condition in Pepper, as used in Google Chrome before 23.0.1271.64, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service or possibly have unspecified other impact via vectors related to buffers.

The weakness was released 11/06/2012 by Fermin J. Serna (Inferno) with Google Security Team as 149759 as confirmed posting (Website). The advisory is available at googlechromereleases.blogspot.dk. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-5119 since 09/24/2012. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62856 (FreeBSD : chromium -- multiple vulnerabilities (209c068d-28be-11e2-9160-00262d5ed8ee)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 23.0.1271.64 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at src.chromium.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
