The weakness was disclosed 11/06/2012 by Atte Kettunen (Inferno) with Oulu University Secure Programming Group as 154055 as confirmed posting (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at googlechromereleases.blogspot.dk. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Google. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-5121 since 09/24/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/19/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62856 (FreeBSD : chromium -- multiple vulnerabilities (209c068d-28be-11e2-9160-00262d5ed8ee)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 23.0.1271.64 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at trac.webkit.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
