Apple Mac OS X 10.8.5/10.9.5/10.10/10.10.1 IOHIDFamily data processing

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple Mac OS X 10.8.5/10.9.5/10.10/10.10.1 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the component IOHIDFamily. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a data processing vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-19. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

IOHIDFamily in Apple OS X before 10.10.2 allows attackers to execute arbitrary code in a kernel context or cause a denial of service (write to kernel memory) via a crafted app that calls an unspecified user-client method.

The weakness was presented 01/27/2015 by Vitaliy Toropov (PanguTeam) with Digital Operatives LLC as HT204244 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-8822 since 11/14/2014. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The advisory points out:

A bounds checking issue existed in a user client vended by the IOHIDFamily driver which allowed a malicious application to overwrite arbitrary portions of the kernel address space. The issue is addressed by removing the vulnerable user client method.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81087 (Mac OS X 10.10.x < 10.10.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (POODLE)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 10.10.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (100513) and Tenable (81087). us-cert.gov is providing further details. See 68077, 68314, 68576 and 68814 for similar entries.
