Apple Mac OS X 10.8.5/10.9.5/10.10/10.10.1 Spotlight information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The indexing functionality in Spotlight in Apple OS X before 10.10.2 writes memory contents to an external hard drive, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information by reading from this drive.

The weakness was shared 01/27/2015 with F-Secure as HT204244 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-8832 since 11/14/2014. Local access is required to approach this attack. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project. The advisory points out:

An issue existed in Spotlight where memory contents may have been written to external hard drives when indexing. This issue was addressed with better memory management.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81087 (Mac OS X 10.10.x < 10.10.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (POODLE)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123193 (Apple Mac OS X v10.10.2 and Security Update 2015-001 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-01-27-4)).

Upgrading to version 10.10.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (100528), Tenable (81087), SecurityFocus (BID 72328†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-48317†). Additional details are provided at us-cert.gov. The entries VDB-68077, VDB-68314, VDB-68576 and VDB-68814 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
