The bug was discovered 11/07/2012. The weakness was published 11/07/2012 by Mark Yason with IBM ISS X-Force as HT5581 as confirmed advisory (Apple Security Announce). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-1374 since 03/10/2011. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120058 (Apple QuickTime Prior to 7.7.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-11-07-1)).
Upgrading to version 7.7.3 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at support.apple.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12744.
