The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was disclosed 02/05/2015 by Robert Swiecki (bilou) with Google Project Zero as APSB15-04 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at helpx.adobe.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-0328 since 12/01/2014. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:
Adobe has released security updates for Adobe Flash Player for Windows, Macintosh and Linux. These updates address vulnerabilities that could potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system.
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81127 (Flash Player <= 16.0.0.296 Unspecified Code Execution (APSA15-02 / APSB15-04)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123259 (Adobe Flash Player Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (APSB15-04)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19516.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (100713), Tenable (81127), SecurityFocus (BID 72514†), Secunia (SA62886†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1031706†).
